When the Star Wars: The Last Jedi teaser trailer dropped, fans of the franchise went nuts. Now, the Lego version has toy fans hype too.
Star Wars and Lego go together like peanut butter and jelly, mac and cheese, Rey and the Force. The two have an illustrious history of collaborations, both officially-sanctioned and fan-created. A perfect recreation, from Workshop LEGO Animations, of the teaser trailer is just the latest offering to excite fans of both.
Check out the shot-for-shot, note-for-note Lego recreation below.
As always, seeing the characters in minifig form is delightfully adorable and the attention to detail is remarkable. (Fun fact: When produced for the minifigs you find in your sets, the hair pieces like Rey’s are sculpted by hand at a 3:1 scale before being shrunk to fit Lego heads.) The dramatic shots – crashing planes and rolling waves – translate surprisingly well to Lego.
The Last Jedi will arrive in theaters December 25, 2017 and fan trailers have always been a tried and true way for fans to show their excitement. The 8-bit trailer, which caught the eye of director Rian Johnson, is also extremely fun, if inherently less of a shot-for-shot affair.
The movie marks the third release since the movie canon was revived with The Force Awakens, but only the second episode in the sequel trilogy. Formally, it’s Episode VIII. Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac and Adam Driver all reprise their roles. Mark Hamill, seen in both human and Lego form in the trailer as Luke Skywalker, appears to have a greater part to play this time around and her performance as General Leia Organa is the final film appearance of Carrie Fisher, who passed away in December 2016.
Lego will, of course, release sets for The Last Jedi and if the step-by-step process is to be believed, they are no doubt working on them already.
