The Lego Ninjago Movie came out this weekend, but will it be able to raise its low Rotten Tomatoes score before next weekend?

If you’re a Lego fan, then you probably know that the Lego Ninjago Movie has finally hit theaters. It’s the third of Lego’s foray into the world of cinema, following the critically acclaimed The Lego Movie and Lego Batman Movie.

While those two movies were generally well-recieved by critics (Lego Movie 96% and Lego Batman 91%), the streak seems to have been snapped by the Lego Ninjago Movie. Right now the flick has just 50 percent — which isn’t really that great.

In fact, it’s about as average as it gets, and that’s not good. Of course, Rotten Tomato scores have never ruined a movie experience for anyone before — despite what you may have heard about them.

If you can’t read it or are too lazy to open the larger image, the consensus reads:

"Despite ample charm and a few solid gags, The Lego Ninjago Movie suggests this franchise’s formula isn’t clicking like it used to."

The good news here is that the movie has a positive Audience Score, which means there’s still higher interest from fans than there is critics. That’s especially important with something like this where the fandom is niche compared to something like Batman V Superman.

The fact is, fans who want to see the movie are going to see the movie regardless of whether or not the critics like it. There’s a downside to this: the formula for the Lego Movies seem to not be as universal as we once thought. There’s an all-star cast and a weekend where there’s minimal competition, but the film still underperforms at the box office and doesn’t woo critics.

That being said, Lego movies aren’t for the critics and it’s going to be up to the fans to determine the future of the franchise.
